Custom Outdoor Kitchen - Whether or not you want or need a custom outdoor kitchen depends upon your family's lifestyle. Do you grill outdoors often? Do you entertain guests at a cookout often? Do you have a patio or pool area that you like to expand and/or use more often? When you do cook out, do you want to make the process easier? No need to go back into your house for a variety of miscellaneous items. If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, you should consider a custom outdoor kitchen.Once you have made the decision to add a custom outdoor kitchen you should consider the following:
What size area will you need for entertaining?
What times of the year will the new concept be used?
Do you need covering for cooking and entertaining areas?
Do you want your kitchen components movable or permanently located? Your custom kitchen can be as simple or elaborate as you desire and can afford. First set a dollar budget for the project. Break the project into smaller tasks/purchases and estimate the cost of each. Hopefully the total cost will not be over budget. Before you actually start the project, check on your local requirements for the necessity of a building permit. Generally, if you are installing any permanent items - such as a concrete slab for the cooking area - you will probably need to acquire a building permit. If you already have a patio area and plan to use only "portable units with wheels" in your design, you will not need a building permit. As you are designing and laying out your patio kitchen, check the accessibility of utilities - electricity, natural gas (unless you are going to use propane) and water. You want to minimize the wires & pipes required by your concept. Make a pictorial layout of your area. Start adding component pieces. Use the space wisely. Think of the traffic flow for guests to view the cooking and socialize. Make sure there is sufficient space around the preparation and cooking areas. These areas will become the focal point for any entertaining.
